Ways to live frugally while enjoying life

Highway 101 Road Trip

Highway 101 Road Trip

I love traveling!! Definitely one of my favorite things to do! Nothing like seeing a new place for the first time and just branching out from what you are used to…The people, culture, views, it’s all so amazing!!

So my mom and I got some sad news that my Uncle had passed away and we were going to be traveling to Southern Oregon for his funeral, so we decided to make a road trip out of it. One of my Uncles favorite places was the Redwood Forest so I thought gosh we should go there since I have heard him tell stories about it but haven’t been. My mom had been there wayyyyyy back in the day with my dad (which meant he probably flew through the Redwoods going 80 mph because he wasn’t someone to slow down and enjoy the view on a road trip LOL) so needless to say she was excited to go again. We thought gosh maybe we will just take Highway 101 all the way down and then we can see the beach and get different views from I-5. As we mapped out this exciting trip for a very sad time we both had just recently heard Uncle Dan say that we should do a road trip the two of us and just have fun enjoying each other because those memories will always stay with us. Boy was he right!

We went to his funeral and left from there and headed to Crescent City, CA on Highway 101.

The views were amazing! I was shocked by how run down the town was but I enjoyed the sand and sunshine regardless! From here we headed down 101 to go through the Redwood Forest, and we had heard the Avenue of the Giants was the best forest to stop at so we headed there! I ended up getting sooooo sick from the curvy road for hours but it was still a beautiful drive. We could see the ocean for the first part and these huge trees on the side by the ocean! It truly is amazing! Right past an elk crossing sign were all of those elk! They were standing right on the exit which I am sure know one could take if they wanted to! These trees were HUGE!!! Pictures do not to these justice but still fun to take! I was surprised that there wasn’t a ranger station in that state park or a place to use the restroom which of course isn’t the easiest when you have a tiny human sitting on your bladder.

From there we headed to Napa Valley! We drove for a few more hours and I ran across a beat up sign that said “Fresh Strawberries”. I am ALWAYS on the outlook for great little fruit stands and even though the sign was beat up I thought maybe worth a shot! So the next right turn came quick and mom whipped into it! OH GOSH…this was the cutest stand with the BEST STRAWBERRIES!

We got back in the car with a great basket of strawberries that we were snacking on and continued to Napa Valley. Mom has been to Napa Valley and of course I wasn’t going to be wine tasting but the amazing views were incredible and the little towns were so cute. My favorite town was Calistoga, CA which was so classy and adorable…these photos are all taken in Calistoga or on the outskirts of town.

We shopped and snacked and just enjoyed ourselves so much in Calistoga! Honestly we stopped at the other towns including having dinner in Napa and they just weren’t as cool as Calistoga in my opinion. We left Napa and headed to the next town over for the hotel. I have to say that I don’t think I have ever laughed so much on a road trip. My Uncle was right… we will never forget this trip!!
