10 Ways to Save on Your Next Road Trip

10 Ways to Save on Your Next Road Trip

I have a serious love to travel and see new places but I don’t like to break my bank. Over time I have come up with ways to save so that I can make my dollar stretch. I think that being frugal with your road trips help to make you be able to travel more frequently, which is absolutely my goal! I hope that you find this list helpful!

10 Ways To Save…

  1. Travel with multiple people to cut down the cost of fuel and hotel room.
  2. Choose a hotel room with good ratings but not super expensive. Best Western and Econ Lodges are clean and work perfect since you are there to explore.
  3. Use your AAA  card or ask for other discounts they may offer. Sometimes they offer a rewards program if you are staying with a chain hotel throughout the trip and you can end up with a free night stay. I have also used Expedia multiple times and you might find a better discount on this website, plus it gives you points back to use towards future trips. Just a reminder that you can’t use both a hotel rewards program and an online booking agent (such as Expedia) on the same hotel room.
  4. Choose a hotel that offers complimentary breakfast. Even if it isn’t the best breakfast in the world at least some yogurt and cereal will get you to lunch.
  5. Meal prep! I usually pack snacks to eat for breakfast and lunch and eat out for dinner. I love to try new restaurants when I am traveling. I have noticed that the cost of  eating dinner is a lot more than at lunch so you can always switch these and eat lunch out or a “lunner” as I like to call it (the time between lunch and dinner).
  6. Happy hour is always a great way to go if you are looking to grab dinner out because the cost is a fraction of the price.
  7. Stop at local farmers markets and fruit stands when your on the road or at your destination. This is fun and frugal.
  8. Stopping and grabbing food at a grocery store versus eating out is still cheaper! You can always ask for a savings card for the store if it’s not one you normally shop at. Grabbing a hoagie sandwich is a lot cheaper than going to a sit down restaurant or even fast food!
  9. When it comes to entertainment be sure to enjoy where you are. I recommend asking the local and walking the town your staying in. If you are on a road trip stop and see the scenic view off the highway or any other attractions that are on your way to your destination. If you enjoy state parks and national parks be sure to look online at purchasing park passes ahead of time which might be cheaper than purchasing day passes depending on what your wanting to do on your trip.
  10. If there is an activity you know you will want to do when you arrive at your destination look online for deals or coupons. Groupon is a great website to check on and don’t be afraid to call and ask if they have any specials or promotions. If you aren’t going to be able to get a deal on the activity  saving the money along the trip will help pay for your entertainment.

I hope these tips help you on your next road trip! I would love to hear if you have any other great ways to save on a road trip, feel free to comment below!
